Fresh connections in St. John
Island living unfortunately often means buying food that travels more than we do.
But it's possible to enjoy fresh fruits and roots, grown here in the Caribbean.
You just got to know where to look.
Iconic islander Cid Hamling, has been providing space for purveyors of fresh and organic fruit and roots, in front of Connections, her go to place business and reservation center in the heart of Cruz Bay.
We recently spotted an abundant display of stunning specimens being sold by Martha P-Jolly, a native of Dominica. We scored a five-pound stunningly sweet ripe papaya, cucumbers, avocados and star fruits (aka Carambola). Martha offers different fruits and roots each day, including bananas, mangos, yams breadfruit, dasheen and ginger and nutmeg homegrown in St. Croix, St. Thomas and Dominica.
Marilyn also sells he grown tamarind balls, tamarind stew, and hot sauce.
She says she takes special orders and will try to get your heart’s desire for the holidays.
You can find her at Connections usually on Tuesday. Hamling also provides space for other vendors. Dreena and Simon sell organic produce from St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Look for them Thursday and Friday in front of Connections too.
